CHAPTER SEVEN

Beth’s abdomen pressed against the bathroom sink as she peered into the mirror. Same blue eyes. No change in her wavy hair. Thankfully, no sign of wrinkles. Yet, even after a week, she felt incredibly different.

She reached for the navy business suit hanging on the closet door. I hope it still fits. Afterall, it’s been seven months since I wore it. And after consuming a lot of chocolate chip cookies.

Although the jacket was a little snug under the arms, she didn’t have time to find anything else. Dean was on his way.

Once she traded her fuzzy pink robe for her dressier attire, she went to her living room and opened up her new Bible. She wasn’t even sure where to start. Genesis? Psalms? Revelation?

She knew after she’d prayed what Dean later called “The Sinner’s Prayer,” he encouraged her to read her Bible. She’d have to ask him where to start.

Ten minutes later, Beth heard a beep. She peeked out the curtains to see Dean closing his truck door and jogging up her sidewalk. With crisp autumn air hitting the Finger Lakes region, Dean looked dashing in his chocolate brown ski-like jacket. She started to sprint toward the door but one quick glide in her heels on wooden floors reminded her she wasn’t wearing sneakers.

Beth opened the door, breathless from her near fall. “Good morning. Thanks for the ride. It helps knowing I’m not walking into church alone.” She opened the door and noticed his jacket looked even better close up with the coffee coloring enhancing his eyes.

He smiled and produced a single red rose from behind his back. “I wanted to get something to commemorate your first week as a Christian, but I didn’t know what to get. I know red roses mean love and...” His voice shook as he handed the flower to her. “I wanted you to remember how deep God’s love is for you.”

Beth lifted the rose to her chest. “This is beautiful, Dean. Thank you. No one has ever done anything this kind for me before.” She held the door with her other hand. “Come on in while I put this in water. I’ll hurry.” She again tried to walk with speed but the tight shoes weren’t cooperating.

Dean cleared his throat. “You look really nice, but is that what you want to wear?”

She turned toward him. “Why? Am I not presentable enough? Should I wear a dress? Is the necklace too much?” Her words rushed as her blood pressure spiked.

Dean reached out and touched her shoulder. “Not at all. The question is, are you comfortable? You don’t have to impress anyone. Not even God. Especially Him. Remember, this isn’t religion. It’s a relationship. Wear what’s comfortable and modest. That’s all.”

She reached down and slipped off a shoe. “I can chuck these back into my closet?”

“Absolutely.”

Beth took off the other shoe and handed him the rose. “I have a vase under the kitchen sink. Would you take care of that while I change?”

He chuckled and gestured for her to go.
